Founded by William Barton Rogers in 1861, MIT is chartered as a non-profit organization and is owned and governed by a privately appointed board of trustees known as the MIT Corporation. In the 21st century, the mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world.
